How to Turn Conversations into Business Opportunities
The importance of building genuine human-to-human connections has never been greater.than today. While digital tools have transformed the way we communicate, it’s the power of personal interactions that truly drives meaningful business growth.
I recognized this long before the world shifted to virtual connections. Drawing on my diverse experiences in education, business, and international relocation, I learnt firsthand the need for people to better understand the true value of connection to build relationships for business and life.
In my book, Two Ears, One Mouth and A Big Heart, I share my journey of establishing Your Time Matters, a business networking community built on the belief that one conversation can change everything. Founded in 2013, before the world went into lockdown, YTM has always emphasized the value of in person face-to-face interactions and the ripple effect that can stem from genuine relationships. I even wrote that you cannot network effectively online!
Of course I have now learnt it is possible and kept my community actively engaged over those tough years. We now offer online opportunities for learning and support to the members , men and women, who seek knowledge, support and opportunities to grow their businesses and impact.
Conversation holds the potential to unlock new opportunities
I have seen how authentic connections, fostered through intentional conversations, can spark powerful outcomes, boost confidence, create powerful opportunities for personal and professional growth and even change lives. Listen to my podcast and hear fabulous conversations with a diverse range of people all contributing their experience and knowledge to now only build a business but influence better outcomes for many. One of my favourites is A story of opportunity , collaboration and contribution "One Bicycle at a Time" which started from a conversation at one of my networking dinners, and now impacts lives of locals in Namibia.
Networks are our life blood and every conversation holds the potential to unlock new opportunities. Yet, the true art lies in transforming these conversations into tangible business growth.
Whether working with me one to one, attending an event with my community or having me facilitate an event for your group, I empower you to turn everyday interactions for you to learn, grow and achieve, whatever it is that matters to you.
8 tips to Better Networking Results
These steps are what I encourage you to remember and can practice with me in role play situations or refine at my workshops.
1. Set Clear Intentions
Before entering any conversation, have a clear idea of what you aim to achieve. Whether it's building a new relationship, exploring potential collaborations, or identifying a client’s needs, knowing your purpose will guide the conversation in a meaningful direction. Remember, the intention should not be purely transactional—focus on creating value for both parties.
“I first met Kerryn early 2018 at a retreat and was drawn to her ability to create a conversation from the most simple introduction. What I’ve learnt in the time since has been how to connect with my peers, clients and family members in a whole new manner. Kerryn has also made me think about the new connections I could make and how to reach out to them to get to know them. Many thanks to Kerryn for helping me grow as a woman, business owner, friend and family member. I look forward to enjoying our connection for many years to come. ”
— Sarah Bruce
2. Listen Actively
Listening is more than just hearing words; it’s about understanding the underlying messages, emotions, and needs. By listening actively, you not only show respect but also gain insights that can reveal opportunities to offer solutions or suggest collaborations. It’s through this deep understanding that trust is built, paving the way for stronger business relationships.
“I was struggling with finding networking quite uncomfortable and impersonal.Since working with Kerryn, I have gained confidence and enjoyment in networking.
As a result of this, I have developed significant business relationships, which have had a positive impact on me, on both a business and personal level.”
-Peter Burgess, Principal, Process Culture
3. Ask the Right Questions
The quality of your questions can determine the depth of the conversation. Open-ended questions encourage dialogue, uncover insights, and reveal opportunities that may not be immediately apparent. For example, instead of asking, “Do you need help with marketing?” try, “What challenges are you currently facing in reaching your target audience?” This invites the other person to share more, allowing you to identify ways you can add value.

4. Create Value First
Conversations should not be driven by what you can gain, but by what you can offer. By focusing on how you can help the other person—whether through advice, connections, or resources—you position yourself as a valuable ally. This approach not only strengthens the relationship but often leads to reciprocation, where the other person is eager to help you in return.
“At first, I was a bit unsure of Networking. But very quickly Kerryn and the other members of YTM made me feel very welcome.
After only a couple of meetings I now have gained a greater focus on how to manage and grow my business.”-
-Darren Lutchner, 365 Assist
5. Follow Up with Purpose
The follow-up is where many opportunities are either realized or lost. After a meaningful conversation, follow up with a message that reinforces the key points discussed and outlines potential next steps. Whether it’s scheduling a further meeting, sending additional information, or connecting them with someone in your network, purposeful follow-up keeps the momentum going and demonstrates your commitment to the relationship.
Our community follow- up lunchs were introduced in 2024, to make sure people scheduled time to make time for this important strategy in building your business.
6. Stay Curious and Open-Minded
Approach every conversation with curiosity and an open mind. You never know where a discussion might lead—sometimes the most unexpected conversations can reveal the greatest opportunities. Being open to new ideas and possibilities keeps you agile and ready to seize opportunities as they arise.
“I have learnt a lot by being a member of the YTM community! Belonging to a community helps to address the 'you don't know what you don't know'
aspect of running a small business on your own.”-
Caroline James, Website Insights
7. Build and Nurture Relationships
Business opportunities are often a byproduct of strong relationships. Continuously nurture your connections by staying in touch, offering support, and showing genuine interest in their success. Over time, these relationships can lead to partnerships, referrals, and collaborations that drive business growth.
You can read in my book stories of amazing people who have influenced my thinking and been role models as they have shared their wisdom and experiences with me and provided motivation to work consistently to make conversations count an have created opportunities that reach far beyond themselves in contributing to their own growth, personally and professionally. .
8. Reflect and Learn
After every significant conversation, take a moment to reflect on what went well and what could have been improved. This reflection helps you refine your approach, making you more effective in future interactions.
