Who is "The Network Catalyst"?
For those of you I have not met in person, let me introduce myself. I am Kerryn Powell. I am a catalyst, connector and lover of people. I am focused on creating connection through conversations. I enable business owners, entrepreneurs and changemakers to increase their confidence as they find the right pathways to contribute to community and to achieve what matters to them. Importantly, I aim to create a ripple of positive change and influence by encouraging others to think beyond themselves.
I have lived in Melbourne all my life and have been fortunate to travel extensively both locally and overseas. I have been married to my husband Leigh for more than half my life. We have two independent adult children—Nick and Olivia, a daughter-in-law Beth and I am nanna to Harry and Lily.
Countless conversations throughout my life, with people from diverse backgrounds, industries and cultures have allowed me to learn so much and to grow personally and professionally.
Creating network synergy
I am also known as The Network Catalyst and the Founder and Creator of Your Time Matters (YTM) where I specialise in creating network synergy through purposeful action to accelerate growth, provide genuine learning opportunities, encourage collaboration and celebrate mutual exchange of opportunities. Foremost, I help make every conversation count. Conversations open doors and relationships are key.
Why relationships matter
I published my first book in 2018. When I started writing, my daughter (who was living overseas at the time) responded to my draft saying that she had learnt many things about our family history and had a better understanding of why relationships have always been so important to me.
I realised that I needed to keep writing, because even though we think we may know someone there is always more to know and our conversations and relationships provide so much wisdom that so often we undervalue.
I wanted to illustrate through stories in my book, the importance of relationships. Everyone can find the support they need and benefit from tapping into the knowledge of others. Relationships are “gold” and offer so many opportunities for learning and growth.
I have experienced this myself and have always encouraged those around me to be interested in others even if it means stepping out of their comfort zone, knowing there is nothing to lose and so much to gain.
Interested and curious
I know many people find having conversations with strangers uncomfortable, but I have seen how valuable networking is, both personally and professionally, and have learnt strategies to make it part of my life - strategies that I share with my clients through my podcast, events, workshops and mentoring.
Being interested and curious about people, and supporting them to reach their desired goals, is very rewarding. It really is a win-win situation.
Learn something new from every encounter
I once took part in a research project on career transition; having had many changes in direction, I was an excellent candidate. The research questioned how comfortable I was with change and trying new things. I remember being asked: ‘Would I drive a garbage truck? Or become a fireman?’ Whilst I have never experienced these careers, and it is unlikely that I ever will, I responded that I would consider giving it a go if it was necessary. Would you?
My thinking was, and still is, that we learn something new from every encounter or situation we find ourselves in. I don’t believe we need to stay on the same path if it is not serving us. We can change direction and a considered decision could just turn out to be the best move ever. Too often I have heard people complain: ‘If only I had … things would be different.’ My approach has always been more in line with: ‘You will never know if you don’t give it a go.’
A magistrate or a ventriloquist
The research results indicated that I displayed similar traits to those of a magistrate or a ventriloquist! The study was not recommending I necessarily pursue either career but suggested that I had values or behavioural traits common to people in those professions.
I could relate to that. I like to be in charge and lead the way. I am fair, law abiding and prepared to speak on behalf of others. I’m keen to support others and am constantly looking to achieve the best outcome for the greater good.
Rich conversations teach us so much
In my book, through my events and on my podcast, I share stories of various people I have met. The rich conversations I’ve had have taught me so much about business, life and relationships. Their stories have prompted me to reflect and have inspired me. These ‘local heroes’ have demonstrated their determination to manage challenges, find solutions or to make a difference in the lives of others. They are excellent role models who utilise skills we all need to grow. It has helped me to keep things in perspective and to value all that I have.
Unlocking countless opportunities.
I know it is possible to make a positive difference. By helping just one person, we have the opportunity to make a difference. When you develop a network, you have the chance to have a broader reach and the foundation to unlock countless opportunities.
So that me. Thank you for making time to read this. I hope my words boost your confidence, encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and inspire you to see that you have the ability to achieve what matters to you, because … your time matters.
Maybe you’d now like to read my book, or listen to my podcast, come to an event, or work with me? I’d love to connect with you and learn more about why you do what you do, and how I might be able to help.
