What does the future hold for women in the workplace?
The old adage of “it’s not what you know” but “who you know” certainly applies to networking. Many people are not fortunate enough to have a broad network or the know how, to tap into a network when seeking employment. This is certainly the case for many of the women at Fitted for Work who often come from many backgrounds and other countries, and need help to find work that matches their experience, skills and qualifications.
Opportunities open up through networks
Through my business, Your Time Matters , we have shared their story, and where possible opened up our network to connect Fitted For Work with opportunities that may help transform the lives of the women they assist in various locations across Australia. My husband is one of many mentors for their programs .
Financial independence is so important, not only for the individual, but also for their families and our society. We all know inclusion, self-confidence and self-esteem improve outlook and capacity to face challenges and live well.
Economic independence and empowerment for women
Fitted For Work seeks economic independence and empowerment for women and their mission is: ‘… to help women experiencing disadvantage get work, keep work and navigate their world of work. We do this by developing each woman’s confidence and self-esteem as well as her skills and knowledge to obtain work through a suite of tailored pre-and post-employment programs and services that are delivered nationally.’
The last two years have been very difficult for all. Through Covid-19, Fitted for Work continued to provide services and was aware that over 320,000 women in Australia since February 2020, (podcast was recorded in July 2020 ) stopped looking for work. What it told FFW was that a large number of women in our population had given up hope, who felt overwhelmed and when women don't have access to that economic participation that is diabolical for women moving forward.
FFW is very concerned that the status of women is going to go backwards as a result of the challenges of 2020-22. Their mission has always been around economic security for women, and they believe the best way for women to get that is through employment.

I encourage you make the time to listen to the podcast, and better still join us at the YTM Business Connect event on 31st May, or reach out to Fitted for Work. May be you are in a position to change a life and contribute to someone’s future success?
Reflecting on my own childhood when my mother became the sole breadwinner, I can relate to many of the challenges experienced by Fitted For Work mentees. I’m sure there were times when my mother felt she was facing overwhelming odds. I am so glad there is now an organisation dedicated to providing women in difficult circumstances with practical assistance and support.
It doesn’t make it easy, but it does make a difference and sometimes that is enough.
Fitted For Work provides transitions through work programs and clothing assistance, and as a mentor, my husband Leigh was able to help them through the process of applying for jobs and managing interviews. He has seen them change and grow in confidence and capacity as he listened to their concerns, bounced ideas around, helped prepare them for the job market and championed their progress.
Our society needs role models like these women who show that with support, determination and self-belief anything is possible. In the words of Fitted For Work: ‘… when women are fitted for work, they are fitted for life. They know that when women have hope, confidence and economic security through work, the flow on effect is transformational, both to their families and to society as a whole.
What does the future hold for women in the workplace? Is age a barrier? What can we do to influence change? Would you like to join the conversation?
