How to build relationships

Kerryn Powell, The Network Catalyst opens doors through conversation

I am often asked why I believe relationships are so important. Well, you see, I believe it is very simple - people need people. I am sure this has become quite evident over the past few weeks of the CoVid-19 restrictions as we have been isolated and restricted in our homes. We like to be connected.

Our relationships provide social, emotional, intellectual and physical support and support is everything, especially when there are challenges or tough times. I know its not easy to ask for help or support, and it can be painful if others seem unaware . What I am suggesting is to try and stand in the shoes of others. Think how you can help and demonstrate you care.

Be mindful that relationships are a two way process. It’s simply done. Do not sit back and expect others to continually take the lead. Reach out through a phone call, a text message , a card or even a smile. Your simple efforts can change someone’s day.

When you do connect by phone, or when restrictions are lifted and you meet up in person, remember to balance the conversation. Foremost be interested in how others are feeling. Everyone has their own perspective, and experience that effects their outlook. Think beyond yourself. Use your two ears and one mouth and connect with heart. Be sensitive to the needs of others. You will learn a lot by listening, and may even be surprised as you connect the dots, through the unsaid.

Conversations count … like a game of tennis, ideas and conversations should be bounced back and forth. Deeper and more meaningful relationships develop as you share stories, funny moments, valuable information, and ask purposeful questions demonstrating real, genuine, authentic curiousity.

In all relationships, trust is everything.

So, how to build a relationship?

Reach out regularly, online and offline too,

Create memories together, treasure those moments,

Support each other,

Show you care and that the relationship matters to you.

Foremost remember- A relationship is a two -way process. Relationships are key and your conversations count because they open the door to untold possibilities.
