7 reasons why there is huge value in having good conversations

Hello, my name is Kerryn Powell. I am the founder of Your Time Matters, and known as ‘The Network Catalyst’.  We may have crossed paths at a business networking event, when I started my business in 2010.  Or, at one of the events I’ve been running since 2013.

I remember attending those early events and how nervous I often felt.  But I soon learnt that talking to others who were also keen to build a business could be exhilarating.  It’s one of the reasons why I designed the YTM events to be welcoming and friendly, with an effective structure to help people have more purposeful conversations, to connect on a deeper level, refer business and build confidence in areas that matter in their business.

As a business, YTM offers so much more than just networking events. We focus on the individual’s needs. When someone hears or sees “YTM” or Your Time Matters, we want them to know we value their time, and provide support to help them with strategies to grow their business and to learn, grow and achieve.

We all lead full lives, and our clients’ time is precious, so we want to help them make the most of it. Why not make friends with similar interests at the same time as generating leads and sales, and expanding your knowledge?

When asked to describe the YTM brand in he past, I have often shared that - YTM aligns itself with the various models of cars produced by Audi.

An Audi like YTM, is known for being well above average, provides a welcoming comfortable interior and quality detailing relaxing the passengers so they will enjoy the experience, no matter the model. They provide an exceptional product to suit both the individual or a larger group with ample room to move and adjust to different situations.  And, their customer experience, similar to Lindt chocolate rather than Home Brand, is far from ordinary.

If or when people choose a competitor, they miss the opportunity for personal and professional development, as well as making wonderful business connections in our community and growth that will save time and money. They miss out on broadening their authority , their thinking and their reach and often can find themselves being constrained to a referral circle within a particular group.  At YTM events people learn how to identify their gaps and access the knowledge and connections they need, through conversations and leave feeling supported, inspired and energised.

Here’s my 7 reasons why there is huge value in conversations

1.     Make connections

Currently, I help my clients make the most of opportunities that are presented to them by improving the way they view conversations and make connections.  They begin to understand the value of having deeper and more purposeful conversations. In turn, they get more out of the time they invest. They benefit from the boost in their confidence and they develop strategies as they learn about themselves and others.  They grow their knowledge, their network and their business which helps them achieve whatever it is that matters to them.

2.     Support and knowledge right under your nose

I have found that most business owners and professionals have a vision for the life they want to live and the difference they want to make. Yet, often they are missing the connection points, support and knowledge to make that vision a reality. I show my clients that what they need is often right under their nose once they connect the dots and listen intently.

3.     Provide skill development

My background in education and my creative approach has allowed me to create a variety of tried and tested, facilitated formats.  I have designed tools and games; produced a DIY manual on the Networking Challenge; an online course to help boost confidence; provide skills development to empower and inspire participants to achieve their individual goals.

I recognise that people learn in different ways, and the various products and tools I have created help them learn, have fun and improve the way they generate leads.

I believe, technical knowledge is one thing, but running a business is totally different. When you have the right support, knowledge and opportunities to talk with others facing the same challenges you can benefit from their shared experience and knowledge, and cement relationships that create a bond of know, like and trust in a “real” authentic manner.

4.     Gain fresh perspectives

People often start this journey feeling uncomfortable and disliking conversations with strangers.  But they soon learn that with a dose of curiosity and an interest in others their horizons and opportunities expand, and they enjoy all that networking provides through gaining fresh perspectives and stimulating conversations.

The community I have created at YTM is warm and welcoming, whether it be an ‘online’ or ‘in-person’ event. Even the shyest person finds that my approach and formats quickly create connection.  The conversations that may once have been awkward for them transforms to awesome because they are connecting with like-minded people.  They are learning, exploring and helping each other. Those conversations really count and opens the door to them starting relationships and business collaboration.

5.     Being part of a business community

I want business owners to feel less isolated by being part of a business community of like-minded people who may be at different stages of their business journey.  A community where they get the opportunity to talk business which their friends and family do not understand, or perhaps are not even interested in. I want my community to know that support is always available. They just need know who to ask and who to reach out to.

6.     What makes YTM different?

I am often asked, “what makes YTM business networking events different?”  It’s because business is generated through the community without the set agenda or the pressure to perform. This framework helps increase people’s confidence and it provides support and knowledge which can be often overlooked.

By not improving your ability to better connect and communicate in all areas of your life, opportunities can be missed and your vision may not become a reality.

7.     Finding and converting ideal clients

I have been delighted over the years to see the result of YTM members, who initially found networking daunting and uncomfortable, now be able to stand up in front of a roomful of people and confidently speak to a sizeable group. They now start conversations and articulate their value. They easily connect with and convert more clients to ensure their business growth.

As The Network Catalyst , I take what I do seriously! We all have the power to change lives when we have a supportive network.  And, from just one conversation doors to key relationships are opened.

For example, one conversation started at a YTM event saw a collaboration between two business owners send recycled solar panels and bicycles to Africa.  This venture changed the lives of the village locals.  It’s a wonderful story that I’d like to share next time we meet.
