Business Networking: the "magic" of the unknown
Our grandson just turned five . He is a curious, busy little beaver and like most small children is happiest when he has your full attention, however recently his parents introduced him to Lego. This has been quite a turning point.
Now he can sit happily for hours at the table or on the floor, focused and problem-solving, learning how the little pieces fit together, as he constructs an array of little models that he is proud to show off.
Watching him, I’m reminded of his father and many of the children in my classrooms who were engrossed by Lego, and followed the instructions on the box or used their imagination to create their own stories.
I’m pleased to see that he is gradually beginning to use his imagination to explore and assemble his own designs because the unknown can be such a magical place.
Developing skills
My years of experience as a teacher, parent and now nana, have allowed me to observe children developing their skills of concentration, ability to focus and problem solve. But more than that I have been able to watch their social skills crystallize.
Their ability to share, explore, question, and listen to others expands as they navigate and interact using the Lego pieces. It prompts their actions and conversations for sometimes-unknown outcomes. But regardless, I have seen how they enjoy the process and how quickly time passes when they are immersed in problem solving together.
Do you realise that there are similarities between networking and Lego? When you network well, I believe you’re playing ‘mental’ Lego.
Deepening conversations
You’re exploring options, differences, and similarities, sharing stories, and connecting these little pieces of information to lead to a deeper conversation. This identifies pathways and creative opportunities that couple together a mutually beneficial outcome for awesome results.
If you network with an expectation, you’re really no different to the child with a fixed idea of the outcome and disappointed when you do not achieve your goal. It’s the same as walking away, and doing nothing, which limits the possibilities.
Step into the unknown
Or you can be curious, follow up and open yourself and your business to “magic” of stepping into the unknown without a final destination in mind.
